In the same historic game, LeBron James outshines Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan

Published

on

For every victory King James achieves, the discussion over who is the greatest player of all time fades a little more.

LeBron James had spent his entire career chasing this moment and one man in particular, and as the points piled up and the legacy debates heated up and the weight of history grew heavier and heavier with each basket that brought him closer to surpassing that revered and lofty number: 38,387, the moment finally arrived.

The purple and gold of the Lakers’ uniform fit the occasion well. He also won the NBA Finals MVP title four times and was named the regular season MVP four times. The application packet sparkled. A week before, he’d established himself as the NBA player with the fourth-most assists of all time, demonstrating once again the many ways in which his talents as a basketball player might be seen as ludicrous.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was in the stands like the rest of us, waiting and watching. The first Staples Center was jammed to the brim with Hollywood elite. The media attention was on par with the NBA Finals. It was heavy and magnificent and inevitable, it seemed.

And when he went for it, iso, a little shoulder nudge, the world watching, excited, holding its breath, and then that fadeaway, it arced perfectly, and the two points that put him over Kareem Abdul-all-time Jabbar’s scoring record didn’t just happen.

He had also surpassed Michael Jordan, the ultimate goal of his career and the player he had to surpass in order to become the best of all time.

So much can be said in Jordan’s favor to show why he deserves to be called the greatest player of all time. The six rings, the perfect record in the NBA Finals (6-0), the absence of a Game 7 in each of those six Finals victories, the NCAA title, the seemingly supernatural ability to keep winning in basketball.

LeBron James made history on Tuesday, but history has a tendency of forgetting as much as it remembers. It will also aid in the gradual but inevitable process of relegating Jordan to the realm of the past rather than the present in the minds of many.

Historians among us may find the use of the past tense particularly jarring. And LeBron James has just secured his place in the future. The album will be remembered long after the subtleties of greatness have faded.

I write this as a child of the Jordan era, a fan of his, a kid who wanted to Be Like Mike and listened to that jingle on repeat as I traveled from Iowa to the Chicago suburbs and back, taking in the two threepeats as if they were happening next door, as if I were witnessing something that could never happen again.

When we assessed basketball’s greatness, we all agreed that Mike was its pinnacle, so much so that we actively discouraged others from becoming like him. Mike’s role was to play as an individual. Forever.

However, LeBron James is now that player. He’s been too wonderful for too long, dominating at such a high level that his greatness is comparable to Jordan’s but has endured for too long for Mike to match. What best summarizes this is the record for most points ever scored.

Even when Jordan was considered the greatest player of all time, there were still grizzled veterans who insisted that Kareem was the real deal. That Kareem was the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, a rebounding machine, a six-time NBA champion, and had a career that was remarkable in every way.

They knew it wasn’t Jordan since they’d seen Kareem and had their doubts. However, time continues to pass. As a rule, it’s not consistent.

Being the finest of all time requires you to marginally erase the achievements of your competitors. It’s impossible to win at the GOAT game. You’re not only erecting a structure. You’re trying to outrun someone, but passing them will only make them feel smaller.

Something similar was done by Jordan to Kareem, and in a way, to the Magic-Bird duality that came before him. LeBron has now matched what they’ve done to everyone other.

Recent trends show that e-road bikes are becoming increasingly popular because they make cycling more accessible to a wider range of people.

Important Features to Consider

When choosing a road bike, several factors play an important role in performance and comfort.

Frame Material
