On October 24, the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Inspector General (OIG) released a report urging the watchdog to investigate power industry practices.

The report found that DOE had not implemented effective oversight of the power industry, and that it lacked adequate mechanisms to monitor and assess power plant performance.

The OIG has recommended that DOE establish an office responsible for energy sector oversight, improve its data collection and analysis capabilities, and strengthen its relationships with power companies.

In a statement responding to the report, Secretary Perry said that DOE will take the OIG’s recommendations “seriously.” He added that DOE is committed to ensuring “that taxpayer dollars are being used prudently and efficiently.”

This is not the first time that DOE has been accused of failing to properly oversee the power industry. In 2015, Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA), which mandated that DOE develop a plan for overseeing the sector. However, officials have said that EISA does not give them sufficient authority to implement its provisions.
